Wildlife Management
Living close to nature is one of the best parts of life in Sunset Beach — but it also means sharing our surroundings with wildlife, including bears, cougars, and other animals.
Respecting wildlife and managing attractants are key to keeping both residents and animals safe.
Bear Safety Tips:
-
Secure your garbage: Store garbage in bear-resistant bins or keep it indoors until pickup day.
-
Remove attractants: Avoid leaving pet food, bird seed, or ripe fruit outdoors. Clean your barbecues after each use.
-
Compost carefully: Do not put meat, fish, or other strong-smelling items in your compost.
-
Travel smart: When walking, biking, or hiking, stay alert, make noise, and carry bear spray.
-
Report bear activity: If you see a bear near the village, call 1-800-642-3800.
Cougar Safety Tips:
-
Be aware: Cougars are most active at dusk, night, and dawn.
-
Travel in groups: If you are out walking, stick together and keep pets on a leash.
-
Stay calm: If you encounter a cougar, do not run. Maintain eye contact, make yourself look larger, and back away slowly.
-
Protect pets: Do not leave pets unattended outdoors, especially at night.
General Wildlife Tips:
-
Never feed wildlife — it is illegal and dangerous.
-
Keep a safe distance from all animals, even if they seem harmless.
-
Teach children how to react calmly and safely around wildlife.
