Shorelands and Riparian Areas: Protecting Our Natural Edges

The shoreline — where land meets the water — is one of the most important and sensitive parts of our environment.

This riparian area acts as a natural buffer, protecting water quality, preventing erosion, supporting fish and wildlife habitat, and keeping Sunset Beach beautiful for generations to come.

As residents and visitors, it is our shared responsibility to protect these vital areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain Natural Vegetation:
Native grasses, shrubs, and trees help stabilize the soil, filter pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat. Avoid removing natural vegetation along the shoreline.

  • Minimize Disturbance:
Heavy equipment, excessive mowing, building structures, or altering the land along the shore can damage these sensitive areas and may require provincial or municipal approvals.

  • Prevent Erosion:
Natural shorelines absorb wave energy and prevent erosion. Hard landscaping (like rock walls or cement) can worsen erosion problems over time if done improperly.

  • Respect Setbacks:
Development near the lake must meet required setback distances under the Summer Village’s Land Use Bylaw. Contact the Summer Village office before starting any shoreline project.

  • Use Docks Responsibly:
Dock placement must minimize disturbance to aquatic plants and habitat. Docks must comply with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas guidelines and the Summer Village's regulations.

  • Avoid Chemical Use:
Do not use fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides near the water. These products can easily run off into the lake and harm water quality and aquatic life.

Did You Know?
  • Riparian areas help filter up to 90% of sediments and pollutants before they reach the water.

  • Maintaining natural shorelines is often less costly and more effective than engineered erosion controls.

  • Healthy riparian zones can reduce flood impacts by absorbing and slowing runoff.

Before You Build or Alter:

If you are planning any work along the shoreline, you may need:

  • Approval from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas

  • A Water Act authorization (for shoreline alterations)

  • A Development Permit from the Summer Village of Sunset Beach

Please contact the Summer Village office first to discuss your plans. We’re happy to help guide you through any necessary approvals!

Together, we can keep Sunset Beach’s shoreline healthy, vibrant, and beautiful!
