FireSmart at Sunset Beach
Living by the lake and surrounded by forest is a big part of what makes Sunset Beach such a special place. But with the beauty of nature comes the responsibility of protecting our community from wildfire risks. With a few simple steps, we can all help keep Sunset Beach — and our neighbors — safe.
What is FireSmart?
FireSmart is a national program designed to help homeowners and communities take practical actions that reduce the risk of wildfire damage. Every small change makes a difference when it comes to protecting our homes and the environment around us.
Simple Steps You Can Take:
-
Clear away dry leaves, pine needles, and debris from roofs, gutters, decks, and around your property.
-
Move firewood and propane tanks at least 10 metres away from your house, garage, or sheds.
-
Thin and prune trees and shrubs, especially close to structures, and remove any dead or dry plant material.
-
Keep grass cut short and maintain a tidy yard, particularly in dry seasons.
-
Use fire-resistant materials when repairing, building, or renovating outdoor features like decks or fences.
Safe Fire Practices:
-
Always fully extinguish campfires: soak it, stir it, soak it again before leaving.
-
Obey all fire bans and advisories issued during hot or dry conditions.
-
Use spark arresters on ATVs and power equipment when operating near grass or bush areas.
