Fire Advisories: Know Before You Burn

The Summer Village of Sunset Beach is located within Alberta’s Forest Protection Area (FPA).
This means we follow the provincial fire danger ratings — or stricter local restrictions if conditions require it.

Before lighting any outdoor fire, it is your responsibility to check the current fire risk and any fire bans or advisories that may be in effect.

How to Check the Fire Status:
  • Visit www.albertafirebans.ca for up-to-date information.

  • Watch for local fire advisory signs posted at community entrances.

Understanding the Levels of Fire Restrictions:

Fire Advisory:
Conditions are dry. Caution is advised when burning. Existing fire permits may still be valid but new permits may be restricted.

Fire Restriction:
The fire hazard is elevated. Open fires are restricted, and existing fire permits may be suspended or canceled. Safe backyard fire pits are still allowed in approved containers.

Fire Ban:
A full ban on all outdoor fires, including campfires and backyard fire pits. No burning is permitted at any time.

OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) Ban:
The use of off-highway vehicles (quads, dirt bikes, etc.) is banned on public lands and trails to prevent wildfire ignition.

Forest Area Closure:
Access to forested areas may be completely closed to the public due to extreme wildfire danger. No entry is permitted except for emergency personnel.

Important Fire Safety Reminders:
  • Always keep fires small, supervised, and under control.

  • Never burn during windy conditions.

  • Have a shovel, water source, or fire extinguisher nearby at all times.

  • Fireworks are NOT permitted.

  • Always soak, stir, and soak again when extinguishing fires — fires must be cold to the touch.

Failure to follow fire rules can result in fines and personal liability for any damages caused.
